CLC RADIO DJ

(Are you here by mistake?  Did you mean to check other job descriptions?  OTHER JOB DESCRIPTIONS LISTED DO NOT IMPLY JOB OPENINGS NOR JOB POSTINGS !!!)

To work as Student Staff, students MUST be currently enrolled in and paid in full (or enrolled in the F.A.C.T.S. plan or enrolled in a CLC Financial Aid plan) for at least 2 CREDIT classes (NOT Audit and NOT ACE) of at least 3 credit hours total (NOT just 1 class for 3 credits), and must have at least a 2.5 (or better) cumulative College of Lake County GPA and must HAVE had a GPA generated in a semester, all prior to the START of the Semester that a student job would begin. If you have been out of school (not generating a per-semester GPA) for more than 5 consecutive years, a student would have to be enrolled for at least 1 semester and start generating a GPA prior to any Student Staff INTERVIEW - interviews generally take place BEFORE the requested semester starts, but can take place at the start of that requested semester. This rule may change, but will start effective in the FOLLOWING semester.

ALL CLC RADIO DJ HOPEFULS:

(New and/or Returning DJs)

All you need are a few simple things to become - or return to being - an On-Stream or Lancers DJ of CLC Radio.

1.  Obtain and maintain a Minimum or better CLC cumulative or High School  cumulative/ending  GPA of 2.2* and be currently enrolled at the College of Lake County before proceeding.  If you are an incoming Freshman directly graduated from High School or have completed your GED, you may be required to have a copy of your Unofficial High School/GED Transcript sent to the Office of Student Life c/o Felicia Ganther, for review of minimum eligibility.  If you are still in High school or are attempting and would like to receive some type of authorized work-study credit, you must be AT LEAST 16 years of age (if still in High School) by the time of application AND MUST have had sent (to the Office of Student Life c/o of Felicia Ganther) a signed affirmation of current GPA status from your present High School or GED area center.

2.  Go to Student Activities in C101 and fill out the new medium-sized Student Activities Interest Form.  Hand this "TPS" form directly to Patty Jackson (Lead Master Secretary) or put directly in her mailbox.

3.  Wait for contact from the CLC Radio Asst. Program Director or GSM - if contact occurs immediately, you may move on to step 4 below, otherwise wait for contact.

4.  Once contacted, you must ask the GSM or APD for the more complex "TPSx" form to fill noting your Work, School, and Free time hours.  Also mark down times you would prefer to have your Show and Production times, include alternate times.

5.  CLC Radio's Asst. Program Director or GSM will, after a lengthy and exhausting process called "TPS/TPSx Research" (allow at least 72 hours), contact you with your show times confirmed or you would be put on the waiting list, if you prefer to wait.  EITHER WAY, YOU WILL BE INFORMED.

6.  Please do not make any plans for shows or requested showtimes until you have heard from the CLC Radio Asst. Program Director or GSM.  There is NO guarantee that CLC DJ shows will start on or by any specific week in a semester  - that is the CLC Radio staff GOAL, but NOT their "absolute".

7.  Shows from previous semesters or breaks carry no guarantee of being held over for a following semester or break, either in whole or in part.  We need and are going to give the newest DJs a first chance and first choice.

8.  Specialty shows, such as "non-mainstream" music, will run starting after 2pm or 3pm on any given weekday; be ready for this possibility (not eventuality).

9.  The Asst. Program Director or General Station Manager will let everyone know through regular job postings if and when any Student Staff position is about to open. A special immediate posting would result if a normally filled position became prematurely vacated.

DJs from last year AND NEW!  You can earn from 1 to 4 credit hours per semester for up to a total of 12 usually transferable General Credit hours over the length of your college career at CLC  - starting by working your ass off as a DJ !  Please check (Starting the 1st day of announced Priority Registration but before the last day of the 2nd week of school) with the Co-op Education Office (Sue Whittaker, Service Learning & Coop Ed Coordinator) and your Counselor for exact credit transfer and type of transfer, whether for Major general or Elective/Minor general credit; but generally these credits go only toward your General Electives count.

From the catalog/website of Fall 2006 (these courses generally have appeared in every year's catalog):

One credit is required for the EWE seminar which focuses on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, and the psychology of work. Students who have met the prerequisite credit hours register for 1.00 credit hour for the seminar portion of CO-OP and 1.00 to 3.00 credit hours for the work portion of EWE 220.

Schedule: EWE 220 is offered in the Fall 2006 term(s).

Subj CatNo Course Title Units
EWE 270 Cooperative Work Experience II 1 min / 3 max units

Schedule: EWE 270 is offered in the Fall 2006 term(s).

Contact Dan Prowse for the process after your contact with Sue Whittaker, but contact Dan BEFORE that deadline of the last day (always a Friday) of the 2nd week of classes.

As there are budgetary considerations, there is an actual limit as to how many students in general can sign up for this program!

CLC Radio DJs (as students) are NOT the only eligible students! SO, sign up early!

All job descriptions are subject to change without notice.  Notice of changes will be reasonably given if the CLC Student Life Director deems it necessary.

CLC RADIO Disc Jockey

Job Description

DJ’s are interviewed and recommended for appointment by the Music Director to the Program Director and Station Manager.

DJ’s report directly to the Music Director for all matters pertaining to their involvement in CLC Radio's Radio Station.

Qualifications: Enrolled for six credit hours and maintain a minimum of a cumulative 2.0 GPA.

1.           DJ’s are scheduled for show time(s) by the Program Director (or Station Manager in lieu of a PD).  New DJs can only have one show a week for no more than two hours for their first semester.  Experienced DJs can only be allotted one show a week with a maximum slot of three (3) hours.  DJs may have a second show, but only if it ends before 10pm on Monday-Thursday, 8pm Friday, 5pm Saturday, 3pm Sunday, only if it is planned and is proved to be completely different from their other show, and may be only of 2 hours in length.

2.           DJ’s must receive training from the station manager, chief engineer or music director (in this order) in the operation of station equipment and on-air equipment before going on the air or producing segments.  New DJs are watched more carefully to ensure that they are following CLC Radio guidelines and CLC Student Responsibility Rules & Regulations.

3.           DJ’s play music and make announcements about the music as approved by the Music Director (or SM in lieu of MD) while at all times following all rules and regulations of the FCC (when applicable) and the DMCA (applicable when on-line).  The DMCA is more restrictive: DJs cannot play two songs from the same artist back-to-back, they cannot play more than three songs from the same album in any three-hour period, and playing more than four songs from one artist during a three-hour window is prohibited.

4.           Part of staying on as dj will require volunteer time with the mobile music (source jock) equipment at public, on campus functions promoted and created by the CLC program board.

5.           DJs with an interest in a particular favorite music style or genre will be asked to commit to working as an assistant music director (not the same as an assistant to the music director – we don’t have those)

6.           DJ’s may use the studio for production time only as assigned by the station manager, ops manager, or chief engineer.  Usually these times will be on weekends but may also be scheduled during or between other DJ show times - generally after 5pm - as another room will be made available for such use.

7.           During Show times  only two additional individuals are permitted in the Studio and both must be members of CLC RADIO and they must be substantially or equally contributing to your show.  Per-block exceptions will be handled as needs arise for production times, as obviously in those cases more than two individuals may need to be present.  Live in-studio interviews and un-plugged (!!!) band interviews will be allowed when planned or permitted through the Promotional Director (or Music Director) AND the General Station Manager at least 48 whole hours before an interview can be allowed.  Phone interviews should be cleared priory, as well.  Permission for interviews must be in person or verbally in real-time by phone - permission asked via email or vmail will NOT be granted; those such contact methods for permission will be IGNORED.  Request permission in person only, please.  The reason?  There may be instances, rarely, where interviews may not be allowed and some interviews may have to entail Interviewee releases signed by the interviewer, interviewee, GM, and a CLC agent of authority to make such a release valid per CLC Board Policy.

8.           Following each show, all DJs will complete the music play list for any songs that are played from cassette, cart, cd, or turntable (vinyl), date and sign, and forward to Music Director.  Play list entries are not required for any songs played from the automated systems.  If there is no filled play list (even if it is just “played songs from the automator”), then your next time slot will be filled by another dj or the computer.

9.           DJ’s must complete the Give-Away Log during each gift-giving segment and forward to the program Director.

10.        DJs must make note of and write down any equipment problems and forward to the chief engineer.  call the engineer if needed.  Never attempt to ‘fix’ or ‘re-wire’ any equipment.  Anyone thought to have ‘fixed’ or ‘changed’ any computer or equipment settings will lose their show times and/or staff positions permanently.

11.        DJ’s obtain CD’s from the Music Director following the approved CLC RADIO Record Systems.  This can mean that, if approved ONE WEEK piror to a show, per show, DJs can bring THEIR own media.

12.        DJs shall attend at least 2 of 5 all-staff meetings,  be on time for all requested training sessions, and attend at least one leadership workshop (per semester).  Training sessions are impossible to miss as they are ONLY scheduled during your pre-scheduled show times!  DJs may be called upon to represent the station at other school meetings, such as specific AQIP-invite meetings, student senate meetings, or Inter-club Council (ICC) meetings.

13.        DJ’s receive direct supervision from the Station Manager, Music Director or program director (in that order) and indirect supervision from the chief engineer.

14.        DJ’S ARE EVALUATED TWICE PER SEMESTER BY THE MUSIC DIRECTOR IN COOPERATION WITH THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR and Station Manager in order to help DJs, directors and managers improve their skills and learn from each other.  The experiences in CLC Radio are designed on purpose to be as real-world as possible, while striving to be educational as well.  If the 'real-world" examples foisted upon you seem inappropriate, stop us and say so, and we'll dial it down "old school", if possible.  We promise.

DJ’s who have questions, comments, or concerns should address them to the Music Director, Station Manager, Program Director - in that order.  DJs who have ideas or suggestions should post them (your Program Director, Anthony Roll plays the Moderator) on the CLC radio website and/or write the ideas down in the idea log, keeping a copy for themselves.  All idea growth will be discussed at the next meeting with the station manager.  f course, as always, if you are shy, you may post your complaints in your own personal blogs.

Station Rules and Promises

What we expect from D.J.s:

No food or drink in the station anywhere near the CONSOLE or EQUIPMENT at anytime with the exception of a re-closable and always closed container of water.  If you have special documented health needs, you must have a filled form from the Health Center for us to file with Patty Jackson  stating such.  There is a mini-cafe table set aside for just such food and drink.  At no time shall alcoholic beverages be found nor allowed in any space, nor upon the person of any CLC RADIO MEMBER, within Student Activities and the rest of Grayslake and all other CLC campus' per Board of Trustee decree.

You need to make sure that at the beginning of your show that you go down stairs or have someone go down stairs to check your sound levels in Lancers Cafe.  A good rule of thumb to use during other parts of your show:  The TV you pass by on your way to Lancers may seem to loud - if that is the case, you can bet that it is too loud in Lancers.  At this time - August 2006 - our audio and Program Board slides will NOT be playing on the Lance Lair flat-screen TVs.  Don't expect it.  Our audio can be heard when Lair patrons find us on the internet at clcradio.org - shortcuts to the station audio player will be maintained on those computer desktops.  There is also excellent cellular phone and laptop wi-fi coverage in Lancers and the Lair, too.

Unless you were trained on a piece of equipment in the station, DO NOT touch it.  There are some pieces of equipment DJs will never be trained on.

Do not use profanity of any type nor use questionable language in the station.  Our community is not only students, but the community in general - we are on the internet and although we may only at times have 70 or so listeners, that's plenty to not offend.

Follow the Station Clock.

Speaking of clocks, be on time for any DJ meetings you can attend.

Tips for Tackling Tardiness

Regardless of the reason, most people who are chronically late want to get their lives back on track.

DeLonzer suggested the following tips for tackling tardiness.

Plan to be early. Tack on a 15 minute buffer before getting anywhere.

Learn to tell time. For a week, track how much time it takes to get certain tasks done. Set a kitchen timer to ring when it's time to leave the house.

Learn how to say "no." Pare down activities and don't over-commit.

Don't be a perfectionist. Agonizing and obsessing over details only contributes to lateness — so loosen up.

Limit distractions. Turn off the radio and TV.

Get out the door. Resist the impulse to rush back into the house for "just one more thing."

Make up a threat. Tell friends that if you're late to dinner, you'll buy a fancy beer or wine for everyone. If the threat of being inconsiderate isn't enough, a hit to the wallet might do the trick.

Meeting planners (your supervisor) can help you, too. Ask a meeting planner to assign meeting times "out of the box", say at 15 or 10 minutes to the hour, or on the half-hour.  These non-standard times (if attainable in your work situation) can throw a late-arriver off guard enough to concentrate on getting there.

Do not put your own music on the hard-drives of any computer in the area without the WRITTEN PERMISSION of Anthony Roll, Dan Prowse or Phil Bartnicki for any reason at any time.  This info will be on file with those above as well as Felicia Ganther, Patty Jackson, and Roz Bietzel. They will and do check.

Keep the station door closed and locked when not doing a show.  Keep the door unlocked, but closed when you are doing a show OR you may keep it locked during your shift, when you choose.  Even if you think the next DJ will be on time for his or her shift after yours, still shut and lock the station door when leaving after the end of your show.

ALL DJs are required to do their shows with the LIGHTS ON

Any person leaving the station must check that the lights are left turned ON

Nothing may posted, stuck, left laying about, or of a sticky nature (drinks, food, posters, bumper stickers, business cards)  be put on the station windows, doors, walls, ceilings, floor, desks, other surfaces, cabinets, tables, or other furnishings and/or fixtures, consoles, computers, other equipment not mentioned or invented yet - EVER.

Only Dan Prowse, Tirsh Andrews, Patty Jackson, Cindy Sarkady, Felicia Ganther, Dawn Byrne are allowed in the office [C103A] at any time, unless otherwise accompanied and with at all times one or more of these people.  If anyone other than these listed are seen in the office area, do not take it upon yourself to do anything but kindly ask them if they need any help - even of you know them and they are a DJ.  If you have an elevated concern, just leave and go to the nearest house phone or the Activities Office to further assess the situation or Call Campus Safety, otherwise just call Dan on his cell phone and report to him, he may ask you to hand the phone to the visitor in order to clarify.  ALL CLC staff wear ID badges visible when they are in areas unfamiliar to themselves and are trained to explain their business there.   IT staff - especially - are NOT allowed to operate nor take ANY equipment without Felicia Ganther or Dan Prowse present at the operation or removal - no exceptions (again, in this instance, you may contact the Chief Engineer, Station Manager, or Campus Safety - where appropriate - when such unapproved actions take place)

Only up to four people are allowed in the station or station office at a time and they must be contributing to the show (or station business, when assigned).  If you can show that you need to have a larger "In-Studio" audience area, just talk driectly with the Station Manager and we will come up with a pretty cool solution (we believe so, at any rate; we have to fill in a form for you to gain access to larger areas for shows).

You can know and wave to people out in the hall and you can use the 3rd phone line for personal quick local calls for ride pickups, but you cannot be running in and out of the station during the whole show and creating a ruckus.  Except for ruckus, you may receive prior permission to do a remote broadcast.  And, no, you cannot do a remote broadcast right outside the station door!  Think, ya goof!  This last method is called "hawking" and hawking is not yet sanctioned by the Office of Student Life as a form of promotion!

Self-Promotions:

No show may be the promotional arm of a media label, entertainment entity, promotional group, non-profit or profit entity.  Shows are monitored for compliance of this policy.  Compliance is up to the discretion of the CLC RADIO management.   Non-compliance means complete loss of show phone privileges on first offense, show pulled permanently on second offense.

DJs are allowed to promote themselves only; examples of such are, "I will be spinning at such and such club".  No other mention of the club may be given - not its website, not its phone number, directions to , nor what it is located next to, not its city - this info may only be given IF CLC Radio has a contractual obligation WITH the club mentioned!

No DJ is to take money to promote an artist or to play commercials on the station.  If the DJ knows an entity who wishes to advertise on their show, that DJ is to bring this to the attention of the station manager to go through the proper procedure (thus bringing revenue to both the station AND the DJ!)

---------

What we promise:

We will come through on promises.

We will help promote your shows.

We will provide training for anyone who needs it.

We will be available during our office hours, or by appointment.

We will put music you want on the computer for you.

We will provide updates as to what new music is on the computer.

We will give you notice of meetings and their agenda, shows, promotions, POSITIONS OPENING OR PENDING APPROVAL, etc.

We will publish agendas at least one week in advance of any meeting.

We will start all meetings ON TIME and we will keep all meetings under 50 minutes.

We will uphold the integrity of the station and CLC radio.

We will defend your first amendment rights to the faculty, administrators, the student body and board of trustees, however, we will not defend your cause.  What you say is your responsibility, but we will defend your right to say it.

(This last list above was compiled by Ken Gallivan)

CONTINUING (incumbent) DJs !

Shows with no name or no promo recorded by week-of-classes number 6 will be cancelled for the rest of that Semester.  IF you can get in and record anyone else's show promo, you will be handsomely rewarded !  If not, you will be given a very difficult time by your Program Director when begging for a slot for the coming semester !

Call Anthony (PD) at 1-847-543-2391

* In extremely rare circumstances and via preferably an assigned co-advisor, you may ask for special consideration, however this is as rare as tuna-safe dolphin-in-a-can.
